Reporter: Nick Etchells

Nick: Micro Technology has changed the world, from music to mobile phones. It only makes sense the same would happen in pain treatment.
Jim: TENS machines was made around about 1970.
Nick: Jim Lamers knows a thing or 2 about tens machines. It stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and he invented these machines more than 50 years ago.
Jim: It stimulates the message going into the brain to override pain, to induce endorphins and just to relieve pain really.
Nick: But pain relief that requires a trolley? It doesn’t sound that practical.
Jim: Prior to this you had them on a troller that you moved around.
Nick: But look what’s happening now.
Glenice: It's like just getting dressed. You just whack it on.
Jim: That’s a 17gram device.
Nick: Paineze Nerve stimulators have gone micro!
Jim: You can use it whilst you're typing at work, you can use it while you're out and about shopping, you can use it while you're getting past the third hole in a game of golf.
Glenice: It doesn’t matter where you are, you can just discreetly whack it on, and turn it on, and off you go. It’s like getting dressed.
Nick: Glenice Hagman is a convert. Portable pain relief is a far cry from her bad old days.
Glenice: I come home from work every night and I want to be carried in the door because it was just dreadful.
Nick: She's one of the 4 million Australians who suffer back pain. Joe is another.
Joe: It was annoying because when I finished work, so did the physios. I had to take time off work to get there.
Jim: People are now empowered to be able to manage their own aches and pains.
Nick: It's basically the same old principles but micro size makes for ipod portability, and pain relief you can take with you? that makes all the difference!
Jim: They are now the weight 17grams, unobtrusive and available for use on demand anywhere, anytime.
Joe: With the tens machine, I don’t need to go, I just relieve the pain instantly and I control it.
Nick: It even recharges like a mobile phone.
Glenice: The TENS doesn't do the absolute impossible, it doesn’t make you better, but it helps, it frees you from a lot of pain.
Joe: I've seen the doctors, they gave me painkillers....
Nick: Jim has recently surveyed thousands of Paineze users, he claims a massive reduction in pharmaceutical drugs since the TENS machine went mobile.
Jim: Well there is a 30% reduction in the need for pharmaceuticals.
Glenice: It's a miracle in that you don’t have to pop pills because I popped a lot of pills I just chewed them up like mad, and that had effects on me. You don’t need to take all those drugs.
Nick: If you've never heard of TENS, Jim Lamers might tell you this might have something to do with it.... If this would help people, why don’t the doctors, physios and chiro's tell people?
Jim: Well you've forced me to say it ....they lose patients.
Joe: Let people know that there is relief there.
Glenice: It's my best friend when I'm in pain.
