Back pain is very common and affects 4 in every 5 people. Most of us will experience some type of back pain in our lifetime and as you may know it ’s not a pleasant feeling. It ’s one of the most common problems why people seek medical care and it costs the US alone, billions of dollars.

Fortunately most cases of back pain can be treated however before that can happen, you need to find out the type of back pain you have and what ’s causing it. You should visit your doctor and then a chiropractor and you will find out more about your back condition.

So what are the causes of back pain? Back Pain can result in many ways. The following are some of the reasons why back pain occurs:

Muscle trauma
Injury
Issues with nerves or nervous system
Infections
Circulatory discords
Ageing of the back
Spinal disk issues
Stress
Sleeping positions

You’ll be happy to know that most cases of back pain will disappear after a few weeks. However if you’re experiencing a more severe type of back pain, than it ’s very important to understand the treatment options that are available to you.

Now you may find that your back condition only requires a few exercises to relieve the pain, unfortunately that won’t help every person so that ’s where chiropractors and surgery come in to play. The chances that you will require back surgery are slim so try not to let that bother you.

Chiropractors

Chiropractic treatment is a method which many back pain sufferers find eases their pain. Chiropractors will not only crack joints but also massage and stimulate required muscles. The main goal of a chiropractor is to stimulate movement in the spine and therefore increase functionality while decreasing back pain.

If you’re considering chiropractic treatment, please consult with your doctor beforehand, as it ’s not safe for everyone.

Surgery

As mentioned previously, back surgery is quite uncommon and only used in severe cases of back pain. Most back pain sufferers will find comfort in using the natural methods like exercising and massaging. Back pain will usually disappear after a few weeks even if you choose to let your back heal its self. A small percentage of people however will experience pain which will either not disappear using other methods, or simply just won’t go away - this is when back surgery may be used.

Surgery is quite a complex issue but generally with back surgery either of the following procedures is undertaken:

Disk removal
Artificial disk replacement
Vertebrae fusing

Before agreeing to surgery, get a 2nd opinion from a qualified person, however with all this said, it ’s a long process towards back surgery so make sure you have exhausted all other options first.

Exercises and Stretches

Back exercises and stretching are preferred over most other treatments and can be very effective in strengthening your back muscles and decreasing back pain.

You should definitely look into back exercises and stretches and see how you go with them. They are easy to do and won’t take up too much of your time, and best of all, it should definitely help your back pain.

Before beginning, please consult with a qualified physician, as you don’t want to harm your back more.

Fortunately for most people healing back pain wont be a problem so however it ’s definitely not something to ignore and should be dealt with as soon as possible.

In a previous article, we talked about two simple breathing tips to reduce your pain. Did you keep notes on how you felt after using the two previous breathing techniques? You should be noticing an improvement.

Yes, the exercises are very simple and very short. However, you can always extend the time you do them. For example, instead of doing each one for only one minute, do each for 3 minutes or even 5 minutes.

Also, you can even use the techniques in the evening as well as in the morning. By using the breathing tips in the morning, you prepare your day. You start out refreshed and with your body better oxygenated and with less stress.

In the evening, when you do the simple breathing techniques, you prepare yourself for a better, more restful sleep.

Try it. Observe how you feel. I just want you get started with something that will help you begin to feel better that is easy and simple.

Breathing Through Your Pain

Let ’s start with the first two tips.

1) Inhale and exhale just being aware of the air going in and going out of your nostrils. Take the time you want.

2) Now, take a deep, slow deep breathe all the way to your tailbone. Then exhale through your nose very slowly. Continue this for several minutes.

Now, let ’s add two new steps.

1) Concentrate on the area around your belly button. This is where we hold a lot of toxins and emotions. Pretend this area is like your nose. Inhale and exhale through this area. Do this for a minute or two or longer. Afterwards, be aware of how you feel. Make notes in a notebook if you wish. This way you will see your progress.

2) Are you feeling pain somewhere in your body, now? If so, place your attention to this area of pain. If you hurt in many places, only use the exercise on one area at a time. You are going to breathe in and out of the painful area just as you did in the area of your belly button.

Say to yourself, “Inhale relaxation” as you inhale and “Exhale pain” as you exhale. Continue this for several minutes. Focus only on your breath and the phrase. My experience is that the pain starts to melt away. I believe you will start to feel the same thing. Please don’t give up. It helps me a great deal.

I usually roll on my 1 Minute Pain Relief Lotion before doing these techniques to get an even more profound effect. If you have 1 Minute Pain Relief, I would recommend using it.

Again, be aware of how you are feeling. Try to make notes to see your progress.

If you can’t start breathing relaxation into the pain when you inhale, just inhale and exhale in the area of the pain.

If you have pain in several places of your body, do the exercise inhaling and exhaling in each painful area, one area at a time.

Conclusion

Pain is common to most of us. It is something we all get used to from an early age. It does its job marvellously in teaching us instantly about the world to protect us from harm.

What It Means

Due to its very nature we tend to consider it as bad or something to be avoided. The feeling associated with exertion is something athletes get used to and often come to relish. It signifies to them that they are ‘in the zone’ and getting results. This is not altogether true and many athletes are addicted to the feeling associated with anaerobic exercise when the body has insufficient oxygen to work.

Different Types

The pain that I am discussing here is more to do with injury, whether that be very minor or severe. It is important to be able to differentiate between the different types. If you can learn to do this you will know when to rest or stop and when to push through an activity.

If you injure or hurt yourself it is likely that what you are feeling is is there to tell you that something is wrong. It should be heeded. Depending on the severity of the injury you may or may not be able to continue your activity.

The other type of pain I am talking about that associated with an injury that you know about. In other words it is not something undiagnosed. Let us say that this injury is recovering and it is over three weeks since you sustained it. Let us also say that no surgery has been necessary and there have been no broken bones. We will also assume that you have the go ahead from your medical practitioner to resume activity.

Healing Pain

It is likely that as you resume activities that you will get some sensation from the healed tissues. The new tissue is not going to be used to the activity and will send out signals as it is stretched and put under pressure. This is normal and will have to happen. As long as the activity is controlled and graded so as not to stress too much too soon the tissue will increase in strength and length.

As this occurs the signals cease and the area feels normal again. If, however, this feeling is respected so much that any activity that elicits such discomfort is avoided the tissue will not be rehabilitated. It is this type of sensation that needs to be felt and gradually worked against in a controlled manner.

Why It’s Important

Understanding the difference between these different types of sensation is important and I hope you can see the point that I am attempting to make here. It is not about ‘blind bravery’. That is foolish and there will likely be a price to pay for it. It is about knowing why you have a particular type of feeling and responding accordingly rather than just treating it all in the same way.

For some people, the thought of pain relief means grabbing a bottle of aspirin or over-the-counter pain reliever and taking pills. But here are five methods of pain relief that don’t involve narcotics or pain killers that can cause damage to the stomach or liver.

One of the simplest ways to reduce pain is to chill or warm the affected area, depending on the nature of the injury or cause of the pain. Pain relief for a sprain or joint injury is often as close as the nearest freezer. Putting ice on the injury helps reduce swelling and therefore reduces the pressure on the nerve endings, reducing the pain. For a muscle pull or strain injury, heat can help reduce pain. A heating pad on the site of the strain can help relax the muscles and eliminate the pain. That same theory is why a warm bath or shower can help to relieve pain. The warmth of the water helps the body to relax and the relaxation causes the muscle to quit causing pressure on the nerve ending.

Another simple method is to relieve pain is through massage. Rubbing the painful area gently can help the muscles to relax as well. When muscles are tense, they form a tight ball. That tightness presses on the nerves and causes pain. Therefore, massaging away the muscle stress can help with pain relief.

Meditation is also a very good form of pain relief. The theory is that by relaxing the body and focusing the mind on something other than the pain, the body can begin its own natural healing process. Since pain is usually the last symptom to appear when the boy is not well, it is often the first to disappear as healing begins. This also works a lot like the principle of mind over matter. Often, a small scrape or other minor injury does not hurt until it is noticed. With meditation for pain relief, because the entire mind is concentrating on the meditation, there is nothing left over to notice the pain.

Many recent studies have also demonstrated the usefulness of animals in pain relief. Especially among the chronically ill, holding or petting a furry animal can create enormous pain relief. Scientists argue why the act of stroking an animal relieves pain, but most agree that it does. Some say it is again the distraction factor; that caring for another being removes the self focus and sends the pain to the back of the mind. Proponents of that theory say that animal therapy does not truly relive pain, just distracts the suffered from it. Others argue that perhaps the resonance of a cat purr or the feeling of a dog???‚¬?„?s fur may trigger natural endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are hormone that create a natural high and may actually create pain relief.

Finally, new research is emerging with hospice patients to indicate that soothing music can also relieve pain. The theory states that much like animal therapy, the soft music of a harp or other soothing instrument can call to mind happier times and even the memory of happiness can create the release of endorphins to ease the pain

The Gate Control Theory was initially proposed in 1965 by Melzack and Wall based on the fact that small diameter nerve fibres carry pain stimuli through a ‘gate mechanism’ but larger diameter nerve fibres going through the same gate can inhibit the transmission of the smaller nerves carrying the pain signal. Chemicals released as a response to the pain stimuli also influence whether the gate is open or closed for the brain to receive the pain signal. This lead to the theory that the pain signals can be interfered with by stimulating the periphery of the pain site, the appropriate signal-carrying nerves at the spinal cord, or particular corresponding areas in the brain stem or cerebral cortex. Complementary Therapists need to concern themselves with the first 2 options in order to effectively modify the pain signal.
It is generally recognised that the ‘Pain gate’ can be shut by stimulating nerves responsible for carrying the touch signal (mechaoreceptors) which enables the relief of pain through massage techniques, rubbing, and also the application of wheat bags and ice packs.

The Gate can also be shut by stimulating the release of endogenous opioids which are opioid (pain-relieving) type chemicals released by the body in response to pain stimuli. Acupuncture and electrical analgesia (TENS) is thought to stimulate their release as a response to stimulation, the opioids then inhibiting the transmission of pain signals in the substantia gelatinosa part of the spinal cord - what is often referred to as the spinal root part of the nerve.

Many people suffer from different types of arthritis pain. Most suffer from osteoarthritis and others suffer from rheumatoid arthritis also known as R.A. There are over 100 types of arthritis that people suffer from each and every day. All of these types of arthritis are different but all have one thing in common and that is they all can be very painful.

Anyone can experience any type of arthritis whether they are a young child or an elderly person. Arthritis pain can affect a muscle and joint of the human body. Arthritis pain at times can be unbearable. How does arthritis pain become so painful?
Arthritis is the inflammation or swelling of the joints. Arthritis over time can restrict the movement of the effected joint. The joints swell because the cartilage around the joint wears down.

Once this cartilage wears down there is no more cushion or padding the help the joint move without any friction. Without the cartilage the bones rub together causing friction which in turn causes the joints and muscles around the joint to become irritated. This can happen from applying stress or trauma on the joints and over a period of time is it will get worse. This can even be the effect from a past sports related injury.

The joints that are more susceptible to get arthritis are the knees, wrists, ankles, elbows and even hip joints. There are many different types of treatment for arthritis.

Some types of arthritis can be treated naturally and some cases will have to get a prescription from their doctor for arthritis pain medication.

Exercise is one of the best natural arthritis treatments a person can do in order to prevent arthritis in the future. Many people who suffer from arthritis believe that exercise can not only prevent arthritis but also can be a natural form of relief from arthritis pain. Exercise is critical to a person health and well being when it comes to dealing and or preventing arthritis.

There is also new natural arthritis healing products that can help provide relief from arthritis pain. Most of these can be purchased without a prescription and can help take away that annoying pain. Did you know that certain foods help lower the inflammation of arthritis? Some foods that are high in fat and cholesterol can actually cause you to experience more arthritis pain. A good diet can give you more energy through the day and help with the healing process of the joints as well.

Aromatherapy is another way to provide relief from arthritis pain. Aromatherapy is when certain aromatic oils are messaged into the inflamed joint. These aromatic oils penetrate deep inside the muscle to provide a soothing sensation and also hasten the healing of the joint. This is not a quick fix so to speak but it will help deal with the arthritis pain.

There are many new natural arthritis healing products for people who experience chronic arthritis such as osteoarthritis. Electric heating pads and moist heat packs are very beneficial in relieving the pain that arthritis causes. Swimming also provides relief from arthritis pain if the body part is used under the water. Swimming provides light resistance that strengthens the muscles, tendons, and joint without putting too much pressure or stress on the body.

More than 43 million people suffer from arthritis each day. Fortunately there are many different forms of treatment for arthritis that will help people fight the pain of arthritis. Before any medication is taken you should see your doctor and have them check to see if you have the symptoms of arthritis. Just like diabetes and cancer, scientists have not found a cure for arthritis yet but are getting closer each and every day

Find out how exercise along with swimming can provide relief from arthritis pain. Receive more information on which new natural arthritis healing products are the best bang for your buck.
